Oh, Stop it with the "Minnesota NIce" Crap, Already! - Local Goons Assault Russian Ballet Dancers
The Strib:

Minnesota Nice was apparently on vacation early Sunday when a Plymouth man allegedly assaulted members of the Russian National Ballet Theater at the Doubletree Guest Suites in downtown Minneapolis.

The 28-year-old man is accused of launching verbal and physical attacks that targeted not only Russians, but blacks and gay people. Five people were hurt, according to a police report.

I'm so sick of hearing about "Minnesota Nice".

After the RNC and after Bachmann channeled Joe McCarthy on national TV (and was re-elected), we were exposed as no better than anyone else and possibly a good deal worse in the "nice" department.

1. How much you want to bet
They are listeners of a certain #1 morning radio show?

2. When I moved to MN
17 years ago, I was stunned to hear there was a 'Minnesota Nice' associated with the people in this state. I certainly didn't receive any 'nice'.

3. We're not really nice - we tend to be polite (or used to) but that's very different
Personally, and I say this as a native, I always thought "Minnesota Passive-Aggressive" was more accurate.

8. When we moved to Minnesota
my wife, who is a minority, held the door to the grocery store open for an elderly woman who was entering at the same time she was. "The woman said "Go back to where you came from." That was our introduction to Minnesota nice.

4. What is with all these assaults lately?
last week a girl was attacked at the Rainbow Grocery Store in Uptown because she was gay...

What are the odds the right wing radio stations have anything to do with this?

5. When I look at the Strib's online comments, I don't even have to ask
what the radio jocks are talking about today. You get post after post (usually misspelled and ungrammatical) expressing the same lamebrain opinions, often repeating the same lamebrain one liners.

As a native coming back after a 19-year gap, I definitely sense a different mood. People are nastier. The Jerk subspecies of Minnesotans seems bolder and more obnoxious than I remember.

And yes, it really is more "Minnesota Passive Aggressive" than "Minnesota Nice." I lived with the queens of Minnesota Passive Aggressive (my mother and grandmother) for many years.

6. I often wonder how many of the knuckle draggers
commenting on the Strib's site are people who moved here for "the quality of life" and then became outraged when they found out they'd have to pay for it.

7. I don't know, but they sure are mean and dumb, and very, very racist
I feel like posting a comment about how they must all be psychic, because they can look at a random black person, tell where the person is from, and whether he or she is employed or not.

10. And then, when they found out they had to pay for it, decided to wreck it instead.
Wreck it for everyone, unfortunately.

11. Where I work, we call them "Pawlenty Voters"
Move to Minnesota for the great social safety net, then vote for people whose only goal is to shred it. Makes perfect sense.

12. I find it hard to believe that Pawlenty is a native
but he is. You'd think he would have gotten the message when Elmer L. Anderson refused to endorse him and (rumor has it) made it clear why. Or, if he didn't get the message then, maybe when Anderson died and the wailing and gnashing of teeth was as loud coming from the DFL as it was from moderate Republicans. When Timmy dies the only noise there will be is the sound of a band playing Irish jigs so we can dance on his grave.

13. And today they are dogpiling on Nick Coleman,
who had the nerve to suggest that some of the social programs Pawlenty wants to axe are more cost-effective than the alternatives.

My God, what a bunch of nasty, self-centered, racist knuckledraggers. More and more, I think that their hatred of the poor (and it does come across as hatred) is a type of whistling in the dark. Unconsciously, they think that if they despise the poor enough, it will magically save them from economic disaster. I would bet that the most vehement ranters against "welfare" (their stereotype of it is about 12 years out of date) and "deadbeats" are only a paycheck or two from homelessness themselves.

14. And many of them at other times have proclaimed themselves
"values voters" and "Christians". Yeah, Christians except for all that Acts of Mercy "crap".

I don't think I can stand to check out their comments today.

No doubt you are right that their blame the victims attitude is their way of not admitting that everything they have held dear for the last 30 years may leave them living in their cars.

15. I stopped trying to make sense out of them
because their entire philosophy is so out of sync with their actions and words it defies logic.
