Sarah Smith studied Spanish at the University of Havana at age 15. By 17, Sarah was the Student Representative to the Local School Council and President of the National Honor Society. Crains Chicago Business chose her as one of the six most influential female students. In 2005, Sarah traveled to Venezuela for the 16th World Youth Festival. At Grinnell College , Sarah co-founded a support group for students dealing with different forms of self-injury. A Jewish student, Sarah became involved in an interfaith Palestine Solidarity group. Last summer she went to Israel and the Occupied West Bank with some friends. In December, all were subpoenaed by the FBI to appear before a grand jury about their delegation.

Sarah Martin, a retired nurse and great-grandmother, is a member of WAMM’s Middle East Committee and former co-chair of WAMM’s Board. As a member of the WAMM International Committee, Sarah traveled on fact-finding delegations to the Philippines , Burma , Vietnam , Thailand , Cambodia and India . She attended the 2nd International and Solidarity Conference in Cuba in 2000. Sarah attempted to travel to Palestine in 2009 but was arrested at Ben Gurion Airport, thrown in an Israeli jail, and deported back to the U.S. (Sarah later learned that one of her fellow travelers was an FBI informant). In September, Sarah was subpoenaed to appear before a grand jury and was later re-subpoenaed by the FBI.
