Six die in Bohemian B&B fire

NEW ULM - Six people are confirmed dead in the early Saturday morning fire at The Bohemian B&B, according to New Ulm Fire Chief Paul Macho.

New Ulm Fire and Police officials did not release the names of the victims, but they did acknowledge that the bodies of four adults, one adolescent and one child were removed from the debris.

Family and friends have confirmed that Bohemian owner Bobbi McCrea and her two daughters, 15-year-old Abby and 3-year-old Savannah, were among the casualties.

"I've never encountered an incident worse than this," said Macho, "It's the worst the New Ulm Fire Department has ever had."

Four people escaped the fire, including McCrea's fiance and Savannah's father, Charlie Zangl. One of the rescued got out on his or her own, and the other three were pulled from the second floor by rescue personnel.

My girlfriend and I stayed there on a Christmas night a few years ago when we were stranded by a snowstorm coming back from visiting her parents. Bobbi gave us a cut rate on the room and invited us to Christmas dinner with her family. She truly was one of the good ones.

She was well-loved by the community and we stayed there once. She was a definite liberal. She fought tooth and nail to keep Walmart out of New Ulm.

3. What a terrible tragedy. It could be something

as simple as excessive dryer lint. Many years ago a neighbor's house basically burned to the ground because of a clothes dryer. Since that time we only use the dryer while we are at home and never turn it on and go to bed. A friend once stayed at her parents' house while they were south for the winter, did a wash load of sheets and towels, put them in the dryer and left. They were lucky there was no fire because the dryer did not stop as it was supposed to and ran for over three weeks.

What baffles me about the New Ulm fire is why the owner would operate her B & B unlicensed. Her estate may be vulnerable to a lawsuit by family of those that died in the fire.
