Armistice and Veterans Day Vigil Posted on November 9, 2011 by Ghost Overnight Bivouac for Peace by Veterans on 11/11/11
Sponsor: Veterans for Peace, Chapter 27
Time: Friday evening, 11/11/11, from 6:00pm to 6:00am the next morning Location: Occupy Minnesota, “People’s Plaza” (Hennepin County Government Center Plaza at 5th St S between 3rd and 4th Ave’s S)
Statement of Purpose: Eleven or more veterans will stand silent watch overnight on the Minneapolis occupation.
Minnesota site: • To honor Armistice Day/Veterans Day, a day designated to memorialize the end of World War I and the sacrifice of veterans. • To “connect the dots” that link our imperial wars as the root causes of our country’s debilitating domestic problems.1 The military-industrial-media complex bears increasing responsibility for our growing economic inequity, chronic joblessness and union bashing, defunded public education and public services, decaying public infrastructure, the assault on the environment, the health care debacle, and the hijacking of our democracy by the rich and powerful. • To stand in solidarity with the Occupy MN movement and with Scott Olson, an Iraq war veteran and Veterans for Peace member who incurred a brain injury by police as he peacefully demonstrated at the Occupy Oakland site.
Public invitation: We invite the public to join us and help foster a quiet atmosphere and somber reflection on the costs of war.
Program Friday evening from 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm: • Tolling of the bell • Speakers and music • Keynote speaker at 8:50 pm: Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer, University of St. Thomas professor and author of 12 books
Come join us for an hour or all night!
