How about Patty?

I think she could definitely beat Kennedy in a statewide race. She managed to cut Kennedy down by 3 points in the 2004 race, and increased the Dem percentage by 11 points. Compared to Bush, Kennedy underperformed in 2004.

Most people like Patty, and she now has campaign experience. We know she can raise the funds she'll need; Patty received more money from individual contributions than Kennedy.

I'd like to hear your thoughts, both for and against Patty.

i mean one can one only run for only oneseat at a time. so if kennedy is running for the senate, have patty run against him for congress while betty runs against him for the senate ????

Pros:

Took 46% in CD6, and outpolled Kerry by thousands there.

Statewide name recognition.

Likely to take 5, 4, 6, at least in a statewide race.

Cons:

Open to Republican smear on "did the family do it."

Lost to Kennedy last round.

but they'll do it. We all know there is nothing too low for these people to do.

One of my cousins lives near St. Joseph and he said those stories started floating around again last October. Never mind that Patty and her husband were with other people when it happened and Jacob was with his brother and a friend who witnessed the abduction. Unfortunately, people forget that and Patty shouldn't have to be in a position to defend her family.

Which is right in the area. She and some others think that it may have been a "rogue" brother from the St. John's monastary.

Because of the sexual abuse scandals in the Catholic church, it came out that they used to send the priests with sexual abuse "problems" to St. John's, to keep them away from other parishes. Although they were cloistered away, it was still possible for them to leave if they wanted to.

IMHO there's some sense to it-- somebody with a pedophelia problem gets out, kidnaps a boy, and effectively disappears from the face of the earth.

5. My family is originally from St. Joe

and I am not hearing any "did the family do it." There was a little of that when it first happened, but none once people were clear on where the family was and how the abduction happened. Kennedy did not raise "did the family do it" during the last campaign and he certainly wasn't holding anything back. In fact, this post is the first I've heard of this kind of thing in many years.

7. Kennedy isn't dumb enough to do it himself

I don't know who my cousin was hearing this from. He does say he feels like a spy sometimes because people he doesn't know well assume he must be a Republican. Probably because he's a big guy and drives a pick up with a gun rack (he does like hunting). He also enjoys the looks on people's faces when they say something proBush to him and he comes back with his liberal philosophy.

9. Patty would make a better Senator than Rep, IMHO

She's got more appeal outside the 6th than Kennedy, and has a nationwide reputation as well as name recognition.

And if the "did the family do it" smear starts up, I bet she could get Republican John Walsh (of "America's Most Wanted" fame) to make a couple more ads and appearences for her, if need be.

I think she could kick Kennedy's 98% Bush-loving butt to the curb in a statewide race.

10. She has better chance of winning senate seat, than CD6 race

Plus she would be in for six years, rather than up every two. I think she would be very formidable candidate, much better chance of beating Kennedy, than Ciresi or McCollum IMHO.

11. I am starting to think more about Patty then Betty for senate.

After reading about how much we could loose if Betty gives up he position in the house, and realizing that Patty would probably take Kennedy in a statewide race she is becoming much more appealing. Kennedy's negative adds on Patty really hurt him in the end I believe. Here is Patty Wetterling, a Minnesota hero, and dirt ball Mark Kennedy saying she is weak on terror or wants to raise taxes. Typical republican tactics but Patty is not a typical person.


If these two run a statewide campaign we will have Patty in the senate. From big cities like St. Cloud, or Duluth's DFL base, to rural Minnesota for her strong child advocacy. I think it would be a landslide.

According to this guy, Patty will not run for anything and that's allegedly straight from Erlandson.

But over at Checks and Balances, the prediction is: Wetterling for Senate. And C+B also reports on a poll that apparently shows Wetterling +9 against Kennedy.

I wouldn't put much stock in what Erlandson may have said. Although party chair, he has no special powers of divination. I don't doubt that he may support Klobuchar, and if rumors to the effect that Patty would not run for either are in the air (which C&B acknowledges) then certainly he might relate them.

As for C&B, the account actually leaves things pretty wide open ("Some think she will not run for the Seante and run for Congress, others believe she will not be a candidate for anything in 2006.") C&B's prediction that she will run for Senate is great and all ("We are sticking our necks out and being the first to announce the Patty Wetterling for Senate campaign begins February 25, 2005.") but no more reliable than what Mike E allegedly may have said.

I'll wait for Patty Wetterling to speak. But I hope she runs for Senate as she would be much stronger candidate than Klobuchar IMHO.

I'm not encouraged about our chances in MN-6 after Kennedy. Wetterling could be (politically) Carolyn McCarthy's twin sister. McCarthy is the liberal rep from NY-4 (Nassau County) who danced on her family's graves in order to obtain a lucrative (and ongoing) political career in the House of Representatives.

About the only difference between the two is that MN-6 is a lot more GOP-oriented than NY-4, so Patty Moneybags shouldn't be signing the lease on that upscale Georgetown condo for 2007 just yet.

The Wetterling U.S. Senate Announcement

Since Senator Mark Dayton announced he would not seek reelection two
weeks ago, a lot of people have urged me to run for the U.S. Senate.

I am extremely flattered to be considered as a potential candidate for
such an important position. Up to two weeks ago I had not given a run for
Senate much thought because it was my understanding that Senator Dayton would
seek reelection.

A United States Senator has the ability to have a profound effect on
public policy issues that affect the daily lives and futures of working
families. After discussing this development with family, friends, and supporters I
have decided to actively explore a run for the U.S. Senate.

In the upcoming weeks I will form an exploratory committee to further
look into this option. My focus, as always, is to determine where I can best
