Wetterling U.S. Senate Announcement
Edited on Fri Feb-25-05 02:33 PM by goodhue

The Wetterling U.S. Senate Announcement

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since Senator Mark Dayton announced he would not seek reelection two
weeks ago, a lot of people have urged me to run for the U.S. Senate.

I am extremely flattered to be considered as a potential candidate for
such an important position. Up to two weeks ago I had not given a run for
Senate much thought because it was my understanding that Senator Dayton would
seek reelection.

A United States Senator has the ability to have a profound effect on
public policy issues that affect the daily lives and futures of working
families. After discussing this development with family, friends, and supporters I
have decided to actively explore a run for the U.S. Senate.

In the upcoming weeks I will form an exploratory committee to further
look into this option. My focus, as always, is to determine where I can best
advocate for children and families, to serve the people of Minnesota
most effectively.

Patty Wetterling

2. She'd be a great statewide candidate
Somebody of her background and stature is almost to "big" for the highly political arena of the House. The Senate is seen as the "upper" house of congress for a reason, and Patty would fit in there quite nicely.

12. I think Betty is terrific
But she's already a regional whip in the house. Maybe we need her where she is.

4. I'd prefer to see her pick up the 6th instead
I think our best bets for winning state-wide races in 2006 come from Ciresi and Klobuchar. I'll support whoever gets the nomination, though.

6. Patty will be a great Senator.
She should have little trouble beating Kennedy in statewide race. She will do MUCH better in statewide race than in the 6th.
The problem with running in the 6th is that even if she wins, she faces challenge every two years in a district that leans republican.
She should run for statewide office now while she is a relative outsider to political process, as that will play to her advantage.
I like Amy but think she should be attorney general, a natural fit.
I don't find Ciresi that compelling myself, and don't think he'd win.
Betty is great, but she will not be running for US Senate.

8. I think she's a good choice
I think she'll play better outstate than other candidates who are viewed as "Twin Cities" and I don't think she loses any votes in the Twin Cities. I think her run for the 6th distric helped to smooth out the rough edges. As a purist democrat I'm not sure she'd be a first choice, but for democrats who want someone who can get the votes, outstanding choice.

Wetterling a stronger Senate candidate, she says

She won't run for 6th District congressional seat

BY BILL SALISBURY

Pioneer Press

After children's advocate Patty Wetterling lost a closely contested congressional race in November, many Democrats are wondering why she is running for the U.S. Senate in 2006 instead of taking another shot at the open 6th District congressional seat.

Wetterling answered that question Tuesday: She believes she can win a statewide race but that she'd lose another election in the Republican-leaning 6th District, which extends from the St. Croix Valley through the northern suburbs to the St. Cloud area.

* * *

Speaking to Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party elders at a Hemenway Forum luncheon in Oakdale, she said, "I'm not going to run for the 6th District. The numbers show me that … I will not win."

* * *

Her poll showed she would be a stronger Senate candidate against Kennedy than two other potential Democratic contenders — Hennepin County Attorney Amy Klobuchar, who officially announced her candidacy Sunday, and attorney Mike Ciresi, who has said he's very interested in the race.

"I'm going to go where I think I can have the most impact," Wetterling said. "Why would we not take the most likely candidate to win and put them in this Senate seat?"
