BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - A Biloxi man who spent time in jail for a hit and run accident that killed a man is in trouble again.

Thursday, Biloxi police arrested Richard Leleaux, 43, and charged him with drunk driving and felony crack possession. He's being held on a $25,000 bond.

In May 2006, Leleaux struck and killed 90 year old George "Peaches" Harris. The accident happened in broad daylight as Harris walked on the Popp's Ferry Causeway.

His family was furious that the driver of the car, Richard Leleaux, was only sentenced to serve five years in prison. It turns out, he served just three years behind bars.

Police say Richard Leleaux's wrap sheet is extensive, and includes several past DUI and drug arrests.

that he was driving without a license. However, since substance abuse wasn't involved in the hit and run, his license might not have been suspended for very long. Anyway, I'm sure he'll have some difficulty getting licensed again.:)

5. It's about impossible to stop drunks/alcoholics from driving.

The state can refuse to license them, but they can still buy/own cars, or borrow one from an enabling friend or relative. Since most of them don't live above a bar or next door to a liquor store, they HAVE to drive to get to their booze. And yes, you could give them longer sentences, but remember it costs taxpayers at least $30,000 a year to keep them locked up.

I have no use for alcoholics - starting back when I was 18 and nearly killed in a head-on collision when an uninsured drunk crossed the median strip and hit head on the car in which I was a passenger. My disgust has been reinforced by having to interact with high functioning alcoholics at work, or in social situations. They don't keep their promises, follow through on their duties, or even remember what they said/promised/agreed to. They cannot be depended on by their family, friends or co-workers. They behave abominably and then expect to be excused because they were drunk at the time. I say "In vino, veritas." Mean and nasty drunks are mean and nasty people when they're sober too. They just have learned to hide their true personalities.
