After looking at precinct by precinct results for both the marriage amendment and the Kerry vote, I'm struck by the fact that even in the state's rural areas, there are a small but significant number of moderates (and even liberals) in the closet. The problem is how to connect with each other. After all, you can't be visible if you don't have people to connect to.
Crossroads Film Festival and
Cups Coffeehouse in Jackson's Fondren Neighborhood would be a great place to start, especially since they seem amiable for all age groups - even those too old to do the "nightlife" scene. Certainly the
The Jackson Free Press and others give the local films all the support they can muster. If you are into natural foods, the Rainbow Cooperative is a good potential place to meet others. Therefore, it should be easy to meet some like-minded people there. By the way, the JFP board itself has lots of posters who would fit in very well with DU. Connecting with them can create lots of synergy. In short, the arts scene is Jackson's best way to meet liberal-minded people.
For younger DUers, there is
Hal & Mal's, WC Dons, Martin's, and Fenian's Pub - all of these in or near the Belhaven Neighborhood. Check the JFPs
for more.
My Point? If enough Mississippi liberals (and even non-neocons) meet up, then over time, then they should be able to find their voice, find validation for their points of view (thus making life in the state somewhat more pleasant), and even work to change the state for the better. In fact, there are signs of it happening now (esp with the defeat of Supreme Court candidate Samac "One of Us!" Richardson!), the increasingly active arts community, and so forth. Doesn't this sound great?
But for this to happen, liberals have to connect. If anyone out there knows of other places and groups in the state with which one can connect, then post'em here!
