Where Can Liberals Connect in MS?
Edited on Fri Nov-26-04 06:48 PM by Phil214
After looking at precinct by precinct results for both the marriage amendment and the Kerry vote, I'm struck by the fact that even in the state's rural areas, there are a small but significant number of moderates (and even liberals) in the closet. The problem is how to connect with each other. After all, you can't be visible if you don't have people to connect to.

Crossroads Film Festival and Cups Coffeehouse in Jackson's Fondren Neighborhood would be a great place to start, especially since they seem amiable for all age groups - even those too old to do the "nightlife" scene. Certainly the The Jackson Free Press and others give the local films all the support they can muster. If you are into natural foods, the Rainbow Cooperative is a good potential place to meet others. Therefore, it should be easy to meet some like-minded people there. By the way, the JFP board itself has lots of posters who would fit in very well with DU. Connecting with them can create lots of synergy. In short, the arts scene is Jackson's best way to meet liberal-minded people.

For younger DUers, there is Hal & Mal's, WC Dons, Martin's, and Fenian's Pub - all of these in or near the Belhaven Neighborhood. Check the JFPs for more.

My Point? If enough Mississippi liberals (and even non-neocons) meet up, then over time, then they should be able to find their voice, find validation for their points of view (thus making life in the state somewhat more pleasant), and even work to change the state for the better. In fact, there are signs of it happening now (esp with the defeat of Supreme Court candidate Samac "One of Us!" Richardson!), the increasingly active arts community, and so forth. Doesn't this sound great?

But for this to happen, liberals have to connect. If anyone out there knows of other places and groups in the state with which one can connect, then post'em here!

1. The same for other states... you have to start somewhere
If you have access to voter registration files in your county you can find who likely to vote Democrat... maybe if your county chair can get hold of polling that id Democrats that don't show up in voter registration would be another source.

2. In redneck republican Louisiana we have online democratic chat
groups. One is for the entire state and others are for parishes. Perhaps something of the same type exists in MS. Check Yahoo.

7. Well we in Louisiana have a bit of a different situation than Mississippi
Louisiana has gone pretty conservative ideologically but we still have managed to keep getting Democrats elected. If progressives in LA were to start from the ground up, we'd have to do it outside of the Democratic party because they are the establishment. Granted, I'd rather see the dems keep the establishment then have it go to the GOP.

Mississippi, however, has pretty clear control by the GOP.

4. Where did you review the precinct results? The SOS site
is missing counties - I wanted to be able to review them, but Harrison County is missing, could you provide me a link with the info?

5. Daily Journal
The Daily Journal published all of the results by precinct for North MS a day or two after the elections (may have been the weekend).

Lots of liberals at Square books in Oxford. Also might want to check out other places in college towns.

9. Being from Oxford....
Edited on Wed Jun-29-05 07:19 AM by shctennis
I've always been around the huge SUVs belonging to Ole Miss kids with the "W" stickers on the back. Despite the heavy republican demographic on campus, Oxford is one of the coolest, most liberal places in Mississippi. Square Books is a great spot for many liberals. So is Coffee Bistro. Also check out Two Stick and Proud Larry's.

11. Hi!
Hey everyone,

I'm new here also. To the website, not the state or liberalism. I'm actually trying to increase my post total so I can post a new thread. How many does it take to gain those privileges?
