1. Our beaches are clean, the water is gray or brown until you go
go out to the barrier islands. On the southside of the barrier islands the water is blue with surf, similiar to Floridas.

Because we have barrier islands, the gulf between them and the shoreline is not a clear blue, but a gray or brown. Not because of pollution, but because of the barrier islands keep the wave's at a minimal, thus water is full of rich nutrients that flow in from the mouth of the Mississippi River. These nutrients are why we have such a great seafood industry (not as strong as it once was, due to foreign imports).

If you want a nice adventure, take one of the boats to the barrier islands. It is not a long ride and it is lovely on the islands.

I may be biased, but I love it here. If you like golf, we have some wonderful courses.

2. Agreed!
No surf on the mainland beaches at all, but take a ferry out to the barrier islands and it's great! Still fairly crowded out there during the summer, but at least wall-to-wall condos and hotels don't spoil the natural look of the place (unlike the Ala and Fla coasts).

Plus, the ferry ride itself does lend a certain peaceful ambience (even with motors running), which definitely enhances the mood once you get to the beach. The ferry is also a good "slow-transition-chamber" for your return to the real world.
