Chuck Espy may run for Congress
Commentary
By James E. Covington

It started out as just a reunion of family and old political friends, but what it evolved into could send shockwaves through the Mississippi and Washington, D.C. political communities. It happened this weekend at the Jackson home of businessman and political strategist Tom Espy – brother of Clarksdale Mayor, Henry Espy and Mike Espy, former Congressman and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture. With all the Espys on hand – along with 25 to 30 of their long time political friends and family – this reunion looked more like a campaign kickoff.

Whenever there is a convening of heavyweights of this caliber, it is virtually impossible not to engage in high level discussions on politics. And this one did not disappoint. While there were several political topics discussed, the one that garnered the most discussion had to do with speculations that are currently being heard around political circles in Mississippi and Washington. One significant speculation is that a next generation Espy, state Representative Chuck Espy is gearing up to challenge 2nd Congressional District Congressman Bennie Thompson in the 2006 Democratic primary.
