Help/Road Information
OK - my husband's best friend is moving to Central Florida from Albuquerque this week - my husband flew out there to help his friend drive here.

They realize they can't take I-10, but are wondering about I-20 through Mississippi. Does anyone know the conditions through that stretch? Has the diversion of traffic from I-10 made 20 unbelievably crowded? Is lodging, gas, etc. available along that route?

They would rather not take I-40 into Tennessee, since it curves north and would be about 100 miles out of their way (all in a 16 foot truck with trailer attached, probably getting 7 miles to the gallon), but if central Mississippi is still torn up...

If only those on-lin mapping programs allowed you to "avoid a street" so you could get the second best alternate route.

1. I-20
is open through the state. Meridian has about 1/2 their power back on. Jackson is just about back to full power. Gas IS the problem. It is sporadic at best. They have been assuring us that more is on the way and more stations will open. Lines are long but becoming manageable due to routines being established and heavy police and security presence.
Roads are crowded just due to influx of survivors. It is a holiday though and would avoid the big cities next week during rush hours. I will keep this updated as I find more local news.

2. Thanks. Please Do Keep Me Updated
They are pretty sure they are going to stay on I-40, but will probably not really decide until just west of Little Rock.

3. I-40
should be fine. They can head south at Memphis taking I-55 at Memphis then I-20 in Jackson through Meridian. They need to find a route that avoids Mobile.Al. Everything east of there is ok and I-10 is in good shape once they hit Fla.

5. Yes.
Gas has become available without long lines yesterday and today, and will improve daily. But, like in other areas around the country, it's a good idea to keep the tank full when you can.

7. There was hardly any gas in Vicksburg on Tuesday when I headed north
Jackson and Hattiesburg were okay. South of that sucks.
