DNC building in Missouri first
Howard Dean just sent out a fundraising message for the Democratic National Committee that includes these words:

"Every four years, a few months before the presidential election, the Democratic Party puts staff and resources on the ground in a few battleground states . . . and then they're gone. After November the whole operation disappears.

Then, four years later, we do the same thing all over again.

That hasn't worked. And I ran for chairman on a promise to do it another way.

So a few days ago I met with the state party chairs, and we made a decision together. For the first time ever we're going to build for the future by putting staff and resources on the ground early -- starting in 2005, not 2008. The first four states: North Dakota, Missouri (emphasis mine), North Carolina and West Virginia."

To this, I say amen. I think Dean has the right approach, and I still have hope that Missouri can swing back--especially with all the damage Blunt is doing. I'm glad he's starting here. We need a strong support system for whoever runs against Talent--not to mention all the other important races.

1. Missouri and West Virginia can and should be in the Dem column
North Carolina is possible, ND is a longer shot (hasn't voted Dem for president since '64 and then '36 prior to that), but even if we improve our performance there it helps local candidates and the national popular vote.

3. I really hope that some effort will go to winning back the legislature
I know that role, in theory, should go to the state party but we aren't going to get anything turned around in Missouri until we get the Lege back.

4. I think Dean is trying to lure Roger Wilson into running for the Senate...
Wilson hates the fund-raising part of campaigning (I don't blame him) and I think Dean is trying to take the load off of Wilson if he does decide to run.

Roger Wilson vs. Jim Talent = Wilson in U.S. Senate!

7. I love Roger Wilson
I heard him speak years ago and he was hilarious and also very impressive. I have hoped since then that he would run for another office.

5. I can see Missouri and West Virginia
WV actually went for Dukakis in 1988, and was Democratic from then on, until Gore failed to get Byrd's endorsement until just days before the election-- which would have swung 2000 firmly for Gore, one of his major mishaps.

Missouri seems to be hurting since the loss of Mel Carnahan.

Also, can anyone tell me why Claire McCaskil thought she would be a better Democratic governor then the sitting Democratic governor? From an outsider's point of view, it seemed like Bob Holden would have had that election in the bag if not for her.

And, I just did a little bit of looking around, and just noticed no Democratic presidential nominee has become President without winning WV and MO. Probably doesn't mean a whole lot, but good for party lore.

As for North Dakota and North Carolina, I just don't get it. Both Dakotas had all-Democratic congressional delegations for a long time until recently, but haven't gone in our column for a really long time. NC, on the other hand, has a Governor who didn't come out to support the national party in 2004 and both Senators are Republican, with the state last going Democratic for deep-south candidate Jimmy Carter. In fact, neither state went Democratic even when their US Senators were on the ticket-- McGovern in 72 and Edwards in 04.

Weird. Just weird. But good-- plant those grass roots now and maybe they'll be deep enough in a few years to make them nationally competitive.

6. Holden made a lot of people very angry.
On the other hand, Blunt appears to be greatly exceeding Holden in that department right now.

8. Unfortunately, Holden was ineffective
The legislature just refused to work with him. I thought he was a good governor but he ended up spending too much time fighting with the legislature. So I supported Claire's candicacy. Actually, I liked Jamie Metzl better than Claire. But I did understand why Holden needed to go.

9. If they really want a Blue Missouri
They better get their Asses (Mules, Donkeys) behind a Constitutional Initiative Petition to run the state wide elections by paper ballot or Democrats will *never* win another election, unless the Diebold GOP assents.

The counties are gobbling up optical scanners with no VVPAT as fast as they can (if it can audit, I want to see it done!). Jefferson and Pettis counties (listed at the SoS site as "punch card" counties, voted Scanner last 4-5-2005). You go find the others. They aren't all posted. Guess the SoS office is too shorthanded to keep up with the Sunshine (Laws).

The Democratic SoS has the biggest GOP shill in the Electoral World sitting on the HAVA advisory board. Is this the kind of advisor a Democratic SoS should have?? See below?

http://rawstory.com/exclusives/map_conservative_ties_raw_story_415.htm

BradBlog and Rep. John Conyers are both trying to get this Die"Bold Highwayman" to be disqualified from testifying before the Jimmy Carter-James Baker Committee next week... as he did before the Congressional Subcommittee of Rep. Bob Ney (R-OH)... in his role as Bobby Eberle's general counsel to AC4VR.com.
The very same bunch that swims in the Swift Boaters/"GOPUSA"/Talon News (of Jeff Gannon/James Guckert fame) post office box in Texas.

When is the DNC (or even we Dem. Missourians) ever understand that its not who got the most vote that wins? It's who is counting them!

Push for PAPER, hand marked, hand cast, hand counted at precinct level! We spend six to twelve months campaigning and the let someone say "We have to use machines to count. It's faster!".

Come on. In a Democracy, the *only* thing that matters is an Honest Vote. If the election can't be seen from start to finish, someone is making us play Three Card (Diebold) Monte.

And Thor Hearne is dealing!!

11. I'm pretty optimistic about '08
We really aren't THAT red of a state to begin with, and with the damage being caused by Blunt, we could easily swing back to blue. Get this, people I know (hardcore freepers even) who voted for Blunt are kicking themselves today wishing they hadn't.

12. Stop Talking and Start Acting...
YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN LOCAL POLITICS TODAY.

Missouri Leadership is a Progressive Democratic Organization highly active in the 7th Congressional District and across the State.

We are already actively working the doors at the precinct level in preparation for 2006.

If you would like to learn more on how to get involved in active today's active campaigns... send us a line.
