Missouri agencies are sharply limiting the information they provide to state auditors, dramatically reducing auditors’ ability to review government programs.
Auditor Claire McCaskill, a Democrat who for six years has shaken up state government with audits that evaluated where government went wrong and how officials should fix it, said Monday that her latest audit of government performance could be her last.
But Gov. Matt Blunt, who ordered agencies not to cooperate with requests that go beyond financial documents, argues that auditors have exceeded their legal authority by seeking additional information.
Blunt’s actions, McCaskill said, fly in the face of his repeated assertions that he wants to make state government more efficient.
