In one of his campaign ads that ends with the required, “I’m Jim Talent, candidate for U.S. Senate, and I approve this message,” a surrogate says of McCaskill, “I think Claire McCaskill is a liar. … Claire McCaskill will do whatever it takes to get elected. She’ll lie and she’ll cheat.”
George Connor, a political science professor at Missouri State University in Springfield, said, “There was a definite change in the tone of Talent’s campaign.”
Asked about that in a debate last week in Kansas City, Talent replied: “I can see why my opponent would not want some of these things to be relevant. But they are, especially when you have run explicitly on that record as an auditor and a prosecutor and as someone who will lift the tone in Washington.”
McCaskill insists she won’t attack Talent’s character because she wants to change the tone of politics.
“The reason that Senator Talent has gone off on this unprecedented personal attack is that he knows that Missourians want change,” she said Wednesday night after the debate. “So the only way he thinks he can be elected is by disqualifying me instead of promoting him because he’s part of the problem.”
