A Joplin appearance by President George Bush on Friday may be part of a final campaign push in the hotly-contested race for U.S. Senate between GOP incumbent Jim Talent and Democrat challenger Claire McCaskill.
John Putnam, chairman of the Jasper County Republican Central Committee, said there are tentative plans for the president to speak on Talent’s behalf Friday morning in an appearance at Missouri Southern State University.
McCaskill will make an appearance in Joplin on Wednesday, according to Susan DeCarlo, chairman of the Jasper County Democratic Central Committee.
Local supporters will be able to meet with McCaskill at 5:45 p.m. at Jasper County Democratic campaign headquarters at 1804 S. Main St.
Putnam said plans for Friday’s event call for an invitation-only gathering for Republican supporters and people “who have been working so hard for the Talent campaign.
“It may be opened up more, but it’s still in the planning stages” he said.
He said more information on the president’s appearance will be available Tuesday when Talent and U.S. Sen. Bill Frist speak today at a rally at 9 a.m. at Regional Republican headquarters, 2700 McClelland Boulevard, Suite 307.
