Jackson County, Missouri Republican Caucus-Goers Stunned


Kansas City, MO – 18 March 2008 –

In a gathering of Jackson County Republicans Saturday, a deal was struck between parties and during debate regarding the deal, Jackson County Chairman Buford “Bunk” Farrington and several other Republicans stormed out of the meeting, removing the Caucus registration records and shocking over 200 attendees.

“The County Caucuses are where Missouri Republicans come together to debate and discuss issues, and I was appalled that the Chairman of the meeting left right in the middle”, said Tina Willis, a teacher who attended the caucus. “The chairman is the person who is counted on to lead the meeting. We were there to elect delegates to represent our area at the state Republican Convention and the chairman walked out before that happened! Someone thought that the deal wasn’t fair and decided to present an alternative, which any voting member can do. It was quite clear that the person who made the deal with Mr. Farrington had no idea that the alternative slate would be presented. The slates still had to be voted upon, so I don’t know why the chairman did what he did, especially since his job is to impartially run the meeting.”

Following the outburst, a new Chairman and Secretary continued the meeting in accordance with applicable law and Republican Party rules. The remaining members hotly debated the two delegate slates. Ironically, the initial slate only lost by ten votes – 62 to 72 – a result that might have been reversed had Mr. Farrington and his supporters remained at the meeting.

The remaining members voted and passed sixteen resolutions to amend the 2008 Republican Party Platform. Among those include resolutions to amend the platform so that the Republican Party:
