Mining company CEO buys Sun Ranch near Yellowstone

BOZEMAN - The CEO of a multinational mining company has bought the Sun Ranch, an 18,500-acre tract of land west of Yellowstone National Park.
Madison County's clerk and recorder says Sun Ranch Partners bought the ranch near Cameron on Friday. According to information filed with the Secretary of State's office, Sun Ranch Partners is managed by Richard C. Adkerson, CEO of Arizona-based Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold. It was unclear how much Adkerson paid for the property, which was listed at $42 million as of last Friday.

A spokesman for the mining company declined to comment.

Former owner Roger Lang bought the ranch from actor Steven Seagal in 1998 and put the property under a management plan meant to promote wildlife and open space while continuing ranch operations. He put a large majority of the ranch under a conservation easement, then carved out 10 home lots and put them on the market for between $5 million and $8 million.

Last April he put the ranch up for sale for $55 million, citing the economic downturn.

The vice president of marketing for Sun Ranch has said the sale will not affect the conservation easements.

This needs to be watched. Mining company CEO's would never have any good intentions when living next to Yellowstone.

1. this is a prime example of why a lot of ranchers hate wannabe actor-ranchers
they really do not have the roots to stick with it despite "economic" downturns. All the good intentions for wildlife and conservation easements do not make a viable operation. You have to be there every day, living it with no intention of leaving to make it work.

3. Did you ever see that King of the Hill episode about that phenomenon?
Very, very funny.

6. Wouldn't surprise me
Doubleplus ungood if he never lives there at all, which is also a possibility.

What happens to the easements? Did they disolve with the sale?

7. they aren't supposed to dissolve
but it is a relatively new tool in land management so there are not many test cases yet - depends on who holds the easement and of course specifics in the contract...

9. luckly even this contract can
be dissolved when the opportunity arises, there is so much land already tied up here in wyoming that isolates all of us from forest service access thus eliminating the chance for anyone to enjoy it. then you throw the road less initiative in on top of it and it's amazing how much back country you can not get to anymore.
oh well, i guess it worked out great for the wolves, but not so well for the wyoming natives.
