Schweitzer targets high price of college

HELENA (AP) -- Democratic gubernatorial candidate Brian Schweitzer proposed three programs Monday that he said would help make a college education more affordable in Montana.

One program is meant to entice more college graduates to stay in Montana and work. Those students would be able to claim a deduction on their income tax returns for education loan payments made in the first five years after getting their diplomas.

1. Denison blames decreased summer enrollment on economic upturn.

Summer enrollment at the University of Montana decreased from 3349 last summer to 3210 this summer (a 4% decline), while Full-time equivalents dropped to 1186 from 1388 (14.5% down).

Quoting the university newsletter (the Forum): "the president speculated that the economic recovery in progress and the chance to earn money to pay expenses during the academic year may well have influenced students to work rather than enroll in courses."

There is no link to the article as of yet, since the university has not updated http://www.umt.edu/urelations/nf/ where it should be since last spring.

We have to get rid of that man. Schweitzer has promised in his 8 years (two terms) to clean house at the Board of Regents.
