Don't know about that.
Conservatism in Montana is of the libertarian bent..."get the government off my back."
Burns has an image of the typical crusty Montana man. It will take a lot of work to make people see how he's just another political hack out for himself. He was smart to vote against CAFTA.

2. Burns can be trampled with the wild horse issue

He added the stealth rider legalizing the slaughter of wild horses to the 05 approps bill, rescinding federal protection in place since Richard Nixon. He is another guy who wears a cowboy hat and at the same time is wiping out American heritage, including public lands. The wild horse issue cuts across all party lines, except for Repub constituents from Big Beef who are pro-Burns. But the argument is that Montana supplies the country with hardly any beef and a few wealthy burger meisters who graze their cows on the range should not control public lands policy.

4. I think Jon Tester could beat him

Brian Schweitzer was a total unknown in 2000 and almost did it. Tester's been around a while, is a pretty popular guy. Has that down homey Schweitzer-like thing. He could beat Conrad, but guys like Burns are like cockroaches, they seem to survive just about anything. Hard to say at this point.

It's doable especially if the dem nominee can peel some support in rural areas, Yellowstone Co. and Billings.

MONTANA: According to a new Rasmussen Reports poll, US Senator Conrad Burns (R) continues to hold a solid lead over his two most likely Democratic opponents. Burns leads State Auditor John Morrison (D) by a vote of 51% to 39%. Burns also defeated State Senate President Jon Tester (D) by a vote of 51% to 38%. Morrison and Tester both have name I.D. levels of under 50%, meaning both have room to improve as voters learn more about them. Morrison is viewed as a more centrist Dem, while Tester is a favorite of more liberal activists. Businessman Clint Wilkes and former State Representative Paul Richards are also seeking the Democratic nomination, but were not included in the poll.
