Owen Witt of Sand Springs, MT, dead at age 20 in Iraq

I knew Owen. His folks are some of my husband's favorite people, hard working, caring people.

Saw Owen when he was home at Christmas on leave before heading to Iraq. His mom was real proud and made him wear his uniform into town. It is a really small town and the VFW Hall is pretty much the center of things.

We used to chat about movies and he loved the young ladies. I used to tease him about it and he took it well and dished it right back to me.
He made it a point to come in when I worked in the evening. Before he reported to boot camp, he told me, "AH, admit it, you're gonna miss me!"

I knew before the invasion (as so many of us did) that the price was gonna be too dear for such ludicrous policy. I tried to talk to people and remind them of what war does.

They didn't listen. They drove around with flags on their 12MPG vehicles and got all pumped up.

NOW it hits home. NOW it has cost. When it was some other town's kid who came home in a box it was not so bad. NOW they understand. I wish they didn't have to learn this way.

Every town's kid is a loss we should not accept. We don't go into a fight that will cost young lives without a damned good, clear, unassailable reason. We don't do it so corporations can siphon off the Treasury. We do not sacrifice our troops on the altar of 'acceptable losses' for the fun and profit of a bunch of Chicken Hawks War Profiteers. We do not go off half cocked, pissed at one villian but settling for another.

I tried to get that across before the invasion. I failed. And I am so sorry so many towns are learning this way.



How can we apologize to all the towns in Iraq?

it's a pretty quiet Memorial Day weekend around here. The towns' folk will do the usual thing at the cemetary, but it will be a bit more emmotional this year than usual.

Shrub* got 80% of the vote here in 2000. Not likely to repeat that this time out; and we use pencils to vote in this county.

I look at the kids who just got out of school, think of the news of the war, troop strength and how badly the malAdministration is botching any attempt to get support from the rest of the world, and I weep. All I see for these kids' future is war and saddness.

There will be too many empty chairs in out future.
