1. GATES OF THE MOUNTAINS
http://www.gatesofthemountains.com/

The evening of July 19,1805, was a hot one in the wilderness that would later become Montana.
On the Missouri River, not far from present day Helena, the hardy members of the
Lewis and Clark expedition toiled to move upstream. Rock embankments made towing from
shore impossible, and the deep channel forced the men to row rather than pole their boats forward.

Suddenly, there loomed before them towering rock formations unlike any they had ever seen.
From both sides of the river, limestone cliffs rose to a spectacular height of 1200 feet.
"In many places," wrote Meriwether Lewis, "the rocks seem ready to tumble on us." At each
bend in the waterway, great stone walls seemed to block passage, only to open like gentle
giant gates as the expedition drew near. In his journal, Meriwether wrote:
"I shall call this place: "GATES OF THE MOUNTAINS".

2. Early June? Damn, you'll miss the big Bobby Burns festival in Miles City
But I second Ptah's suggestion about Gates of the Mountains!

Go to the Historical Museum across the street from the Capital. Reeder's Alley just above Last Chance Gulch is nice. And if you like pottery, there is the Archey Bray foundation http://www.archiebray.org/

Have a meal at the Windbag on the gulch. You'll thank me. Used to be a speakeasy back in the day. Soiled doves worked upstairs.

The cathedral is lovely and there are some really outstanding homes to look at. Architects have tours of Helena to see the examples of different styles built there in gold boom days. The old governor's mansion is lovely also. Nice B&Bs in the area in old Victorian homes.

The Parrot Confectionery on the Gulch: great candies made on premises and a decent bowl of chili. Been there for ages. Tell Dusty hi.

If you like Italian, On Broadway used to be pretty decent. Haven't been there in a few years.

Check the public notice boards on the Gulch to see what live music is going on when you are in town. I wonder if they still do the concerts in the park. If so, it's a kick. There is minor league baseball too and it is fun to see the young men up from warm places all bundled up and wondering why they are so cold! Baseball played by the young & hopeful is the BEST baseball there is! Try it!

Have fun. Can't miss. Trust da momma on this one!

6. Sorry folks, but the job prospect fell through, so I won't make it to Montana.
Someday, I would love to see Montana!
