Tancredo lends heft to protest

Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo joined about 80 demonstrators Saturday in front of Omaha's Mexican Consulate to protest what they say is a lack of enforcement of immigration laws in the United States.
Tancredo, who is seeking the Republican presidential nomination, was in the area to open a campaign office in Council Bluffs.
He criticized the Bush administration for its "spotty ways" of enforcing immigration laws.
Tancredo referred to the December immigration raids at Swift & Co. meatpacking plants in Nebraska, Iowa and four other states, saying such raids are sporadic.
"That's what drives people batty about this issue," Tancredo said. "The president is trying to pretend he's doing something about (illegal immigration). That way they can say, 'We're doing the enforcement, now give us the guest workers.'"
The consulate offices are at 3552 Dodge St.
