Effort to recall Omaha mayor ends today

The petition drive to recall Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey ends today, and organizers expect to say whether they’ve collected enough signatures to force a recall election.
Ryan Chappelear, Recall Fahey co-chairman, said that the group will turn petitions at about 4:45 p.m. today, shortly before the 5 p.m. deadline.
At that time, he said the group will provide an estimated number of petition signatures that have been gathered. However, Chappelear declined to give any estimate this morning.
That’s due, in part, to the fact that a quarter of the 1,450 petitions that were distributed to volunteers to circulate had yet to be returned as of this morning, Chappelear said.
He said the group would pick up petitions today from volunteers who haven’t turned them in and had volunteers continuing to collect signatures today. With the signature collections ongoing, it’s difficult to gauge the total number, Chappelear said.
The group needs 21,734 valid signatures to force a vote on whether to recall Fahey. Signers must be registered voters and live within the Omaha city limits.
