LINCOLN — The GOP may be the dominant political party in Nebraska, but it didn't dominate legislative races in the primary elections.
In most contests where Democrats faced Republicans in the officially nonpartisan elections, it was the Democrat who finished with the most votes.
Democrats were the top vote-getters in six of seven contested legislative races in the Omaha metropolitan area.
In Lincoln, Democrats finished first in two of four contested races — and came within 40 votes of a well-funded Republican candidate in a third.
More Democrats than Republicans voted Tuesday in both Douglas and Lancaster Counties, according to returns in those counties.
Elsewhere in the state, Democrat Kate Sullivan, 58, a Cedar Rapids banker, collected more votes than technology entrepreneur Paul Eurek, 48, of Loup City, a Republican with the endorsement of Gov. Dave Heineman. They will have a rematch in November.
