Covalt, the Lincoln attorney who organized Lancaster County’s successful presidential caucuses in February, is expected to win the party leadership post at the Democratic state convention this month.
State Chairman Steve Achelpohl of Omaha, who has headed the party since 2001, will hand over the reins to the new chairman at the first meeting of the party’s governing state central committee after the November election.
Achelphol said he’s unaware of any opposition to Covalt’s selection when Democrats gather in Fremont on June 21-22.
Sunday’s remarkable outpouring at the Democratic county convention in Lincoln was evidence of “a party on the rise,” Covalt said during a Monday interview.
“It’s time now to become a party with a clear message and a definite plan.
“We need to move forward to energize the middle class and stop the rule of the wealthy and corporations,” he said.
