Nebraska Democrats, energized by this year's first-ever caucuses and a historic presidential nomination battle, will descend on Fremont this weekend.
About 680 delegates are expected to attend the party's three-day state convention, which starts Friday at Midland Lutheran College.
The convention will choose the successor to party chairman Steve Achelpohl and elect pledged delegates to the party's national convention in Denver. More than 400 people have applied to become national delegates.
Barack Obama is expected to officially win the party's presidential nomination later this summer in Denver. His chief rival, Hillary Clinton, has suspended her campaign and has endorsed Obama.
Achelpohl said the candidates for national delegates include longtime party activists and newcomers. Many were involved in the Obama and Clinton campaigns.
"The Nebraska Democratic Party is comprised of people from all walks of life, and it is my belief that all elements of the party will be represented in the Nebraska delegation," Achelpohl said.
