I wanted to make sure you knew what the "political insiders" in Lincoln and Omaha are talking about this week.
On Sunday, the Omaha World-Herald printed this editorial:
Battle Lines Drawn
Nebraska Republicans feel pressure this election cycle to ratchet up their campaign stridency, given that Democrats generally fared well in the state legislative elections two years ago. An added factor is the high-profile commitment that Gov. Dave Heineman has made in supporting particular Republican candidates.
That intense gubernatorial connection really raises the political stakes. Republicans become anxious to prevail. Democrats have added incentive to beat up GOP candidates, since Democratic victories would deal a blow to Heineman's image as a political kingmaker.
On the Democratic side, the unusual decision by State Sen. Tom White of Omaha to donate contributions to various Democratic legislative candidates -- part of an effort to construct an assertive populist faction in the Legislature -- will spur the GOP to be even more aggressive, if not reckless, in attacking certain Democratic candidates.
Republicans are nervous. For the first time in years, we have the opportunity to break their fillibuster-proof stranglehold on the Legislature. By gaining just a few seats, our Party will regain its voice - allowing our Senators to fight against further increases in the gas tax and work to provide meaningful property tax relief for Nebraska families.
With this in mind, the NDP has launched the Victory 08 Fund. Can you help provide the resources to spread our message to the voters of Nebraska?

Today - just three months from Election Day - the Governor is as determined as ever to stamp out any opposition to his administration. He doesn't want Democrats in the Legislature standing up for Nebraska's middle class and fighting for our state's working families. And he'll use every last penny of his allies' campaign warchests to try to stop us from succeeding.
No matter how much conservative special interest money the Republicans have stockpiled, I know that together we can restore our Party's voice in Nebraska. It all starts with you.
Thanks for all you do,
Steve
