http://www.kolnkgin.com/gieveryday/headlines/31204704.htmlGov. Dave Heineman and U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson called on University of Nebraska officials to cancel a planned speech by 60's radical William Ayers.
Ayers is scheduled to speak at an event celebrating the 100th anniversary of U.N.L's teachers college. Ayers is currently a professor of education in Illinois, but is well-known for his involvement in the Weather Underground, a violent protest group active in the 1960's.
Friday, Gov. Heineman issued the following statement on the matter:
“Chairman of the Board of Regents Chuck Hassebrook and President of the University J.B. Milliken should immediately rescind the invitation extended to Bill Ayers to speak at the University on November 15. This is an embarrassment to the University of Nebraska and the State of Nebraska. Bill Ayers is a well known radical who should never have been invited to the University of Nebraska.”
U.S. Ben Nelson also opposes Ayers appearance.
"I join many Nebraskans in disappointment that Bill Ayers has been invited to the University of Nebraska at Lincoln," said Nelson. "His past involvement in a violent protest group and incendiary comments are not consistent with the agenda of unity that we need in America today. I encourage the university to reconsider this decision."
A spokesperson for UNL said Ayers is still scheduled to speak.
If not for McCain and his shameless campaign, this would not have raised an eyebrow. I am disappointed in our politicians.
Thanks for nothing Ben.
