JOHANNS PROPOSES SCHOOL FUNDING CUTS TO PRESERVE CORPORATE WELFARE: In the face of a multi-million dollar budget shortfall, Johanns adamantly defended the Nebraska's massive corporate welfare program. The state has given away $1.3 billion on the program since 1988 for giant corporations like IBP, ConAgra and Union Pacific. Corporations profited to the tune of $148 million in 2001 alone. Each year, Nebraska spends three times as much on corporate welfare as on the entire University of Nebraska school system. Instead of trimming back corporate giveaways, Johanns "called for 10 percent cuts to higher education and K-12 school aid."

1. It's a catch 22

I don't know if you are from Nebraska but it's hard to be mad about corporate welfare at the state level. NE has to be competitive or else business will leave and our state will be even crappier than it already is. I blame the system that makes states compete against each other to lure business in with tax breaks. Something should be done to stop this. Maybe bush will get to this in his second term hahahahahahahaha A couple years ago we were facing a really bad budget crisis and Johans submitted a totally insane budget that had NO chance of being passed because of unacceptable cuts in things like education and other basic things that don't come to mind right now. Luckily Ben Nelson and others came to our rescue by sticking a provision for state gov't bailouts in the tax cut legislation. Part, if not all of the answer - and the bible bangers can't see this and have voted it down- is to legalize gambling to fund our schools instead of having our money go to Iowa and South Dakota to fund their schools. On the other hand, I can't disagree at all that Johans is a stupid republican tool.

2. Im not a bible banger..

and I voted against gambling. It is just another regressive tax that hurts the poor people, and Nebraska still wouldnt get any money from it. Casinos are now owned by large corporations, the money goes to Vegas.
