LINCOLN - From the day he started what many considered a long-shot bid for Congress, Republican Jeff Fortenberry never deviated from his simple message: Strong families make a strong nation.
It's a message the former Lincoln city councilman will now carry to a November matchup with State Sen. Matt Connealy of Decatur in Nebraska's 1st Congressional District.
Fortenberry rode his pro-family message and an army of grass-roots supporters to a solid victory in the GOP primary Tuesday night, defeating the man that 25-year incumbent Rep. Doug Bereuter had hand-picked to be his successor.
"Our charge," Fortenberry told his jubilant supporters Tuesday night, "is to create a culture in which family life can flourish."
