LINCOLN - Gov. Dave Heineman said Monday that potential Republican rivals played no role in his decision to declare himself now as a candidate for his office in 2006.
"Absolutely not," Heineman said. "Every candidate has to make a very personal and professional decision."
His potential rivals for the Republican nomination include what many in the GOP consider the 800-pound gorilla of possible candidates - football-coach-turned-congressman Tom Osborne.
Sen. Chuck Hagel wasn't waiting for Osborne's announcement. He issued his endorsement of Heineman in a press release Monday, saying the governor has a strong record of leadership and service in Nebraska.
