NELSON STATEMENT ON THE CONFIRMATION OF SAMUEL ALITO TO BE THE 110TH JUSTICE OF THE UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Nebraska’s Senator Ben Nelson today voted in favor of Judge Samuel Alito’s nomination to the United States Supreme Court. Alito was confirmed by the Senate by a 58-42 vote. Senator Nelson issued the following statement following the historic vote:

“The Senate has confirmed Judge Samuel Alito to be the 110th justice of the Supreme Court. I voted in favor of his nomination.

“I decided to support Judge Alito for three reasons: his established judicial record; the endorsement by the American Bar Association with their highest rating; and, Judge Alito’s commitment to me to not bring a political agenda to the Court.

I know there are some who support my decision and some who oppose it, but to all of Nebraska I want to convey that as we considered these nominees, both Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Alito, I tried to do what is right for our country and for Nebraska. In the end, if these decisions are weighed by my intention to do the right thing, I believe most Nebraskans will agree with the way I have represented their interests on judicial matters.”

Last year, Senator Nelson was a leader among the group of Senators that developed a resolution to the partisan impasse over judicial nominations. That agreement cleared a number of President Bush’s nominees that were being blocked by filibuster while preserving the Senate’s rules and traditions.

Nelson served as Nebraska’s Governor from 1991 to 1999. During his two terms, Nelson appointed the entire Nebraska Supreme Court, the entire Nebraska Court of Appeals, and more than half of the sitting judges in Nebraska. Since elected to the United States Senate in 2000, Nelson has supported more than 215 of President Bush’s nominations to the Federal Bench, including Chief Justice John Roberts.

Nelson thinks that a solemn promise from a Republican is enough to persuade any Democrat to vote against the interests of those he represents. After all, Republicans would never lie. Never.

It's us Democrats who are the liars -- just ask the Republicans.

3. If Nelson had thought about that promise...

... for even a couple of seconds, he would have realized that a promise from Alito was about as worthless as Enron stock these days. It was well-known by that time that Alito had also promised in his appeals court confirmation hearings, under oath, to recuse himself voluntarily from any cases involving firms whose stock he held, and he did not.

If Alito will lie under oath, how much worth is there in a promise from him not under oath?

So--Nelson's a panderer and a gullible one, at that.

Nelson also stood with the Repukes when B*** mentioned the Patriot Act. The "media" has been talking about it all day.
