Nearly 9,000 people in Washoe County registered to vote or changed their party affiliation to participate in the Democratic presidential caucuses last month, Washoe County Registrar Dan Burk said Monday.
The unexpected deluge of registrations has forced Burk to hire temporary staff to process paperwork.
“We got absolutely snowed in,” Burk said. “Nobody expected we would see 9,000 people submitting new forms.”
Of the 9,000 forms submitted late last month, nearly 8,000 were completed on caucus day. All are Democrats, Burk said.
Unlike Republicans, the Democratic Party allowed caucus-goers to register at caucus sites.

Some campaign volunteers sought to persuade Republicans to participate by telling them they could return to their party immediately after the caucus.
“We heard some caucus locations were saying here’s a second form so you can switch back,” Burk said.
So far, however, Burk’s office hasn’t noticed new Democrats switching back to another party, he said.
Officials are sending address verification forms to all the new voters. If the addresses aren’t verified, the voters will be taken off the county’s rolls.http://news.rgj.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080204/NEWS18/80204044But no comment from the State party about what they will do once they find out Democrats were not verifiable.
