Cheney visit sparks nearby rally

Quite a last ditch effort!!

Vice President Dick Cheney made a campaign speech at Sparks High School the day before the election because Republicans feared losing the state, said local leaders of the Democratic Party during a Monday rally a short distance from the school.

“I think the reason he’s here is the Republicans don’t like the way the vote is going in Nevada,” said Chris Wicker, the Democratic Party’s chairman in Washoe County.

About 70 people attended the demonstration in Deer Park organized by the Democrats. Most carried signs supporting Democratic presidential candidate U.S. Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts.

In a speech nearly identical to the one he delivered in Reno six weeks ago, Vice President Dick Cheney told a raucous crowd inside the Sparks High School gym that President Bush is the man to trust with America’s safety.

The crowd of about 750 supporters repeatedly interrupted Cheney with shouts of “Four more years,” drawing mild rebukes at one point from the vice president.

“Look, the election is tomorrow,” he said. “We gotta get through this speech.”
