3rd-term senator’s hard-ball tactics squash opposition
Nevada GOP bets its chips on Reid

By Alexander Bolton

Nearly 120 prominent Nevada Republicans are endorsing Senate Minority Whip Harry Reid (D-Nev.) for re-election, including former Republican National Committee Chairman Frank Fahrenkopf and the father of Republican Sen. John Ensign, whom Reid defeated six years ago.

When Reid officially kicked off his campaign with three rallies around the state last week, he was introduced by a Republican official at each rally.

In Reno, Mayor Bob Cashell introduced Reid. Bill Young, the popular sheriff of Clark County, did the same at a Las Vegas event, as did Mike Franzoia, the mayor of Elko, at the rally in his hometown.

Many of the Republicans who have endorsed Reid have also donated to his campaign, including Ensign’s father, Mike, the chairman of Mandalay Resort Group, who has made two $1,000 contributions to Friends for Harry Reid.

1. Could someone explain this to a Canadian.
Why? Is it a local or national statement on the part of these Republicans?

2. I'm not surprised Repubs support him....
he supports Repubs by not helping Dems. Harry doesn't intend to have any Dem competition in this state. He wants to control everything himself.

3. Some Democrats must like him
Or else he would not have been chosen by his fellow Democratic Senators as Assistant Democratic Leader.

4. That explains why we have a nobody running against porter this time around
The powers that be sure slapped down Herrera last time around - I was working on his campaign - it was very heartbreaking.

Explains a lot of Reid's whimpy lack of opposition to the repukes.

Sickening, isn't it?

Reid is a mormom, too - which ALSO explains a lot.

With friends like these...

5. Maybe it is the Republican more so than than Reid.
The main platform of Ziser is that he get the state to discriminate against gays. It isn't much to run on, and he will almost certainly get blown out anyways. I've read that Republicans will sometimes fund dems if they think their candidate will make them look bad. Usually it is based on racism rather than homophobia, but why back a loser who might confirm the fear that Republicans are hate mongers. Reid is certainly better than the alternative, but this sort of stuff does make you wish people like Nader would stop fighting unwinnable fights and target places where they might stand a chance and could actually do some good.

6. Speaking of Ziser
Can anyone tell me what his marrage background is? Has he been divorced ever? How many posts do I need to make before I can start my own thread anyways? Somebody post a thread for Edwards in Reno...and another for ways to protest Cheney.
