4. When I first arrived in May of '83...?

There were snow drifts 10-20' on the road... I still remember the poor porcupine that got stuck in the road crevasse... We didn't know what to do to help it... neither of us was willing to physically help it. I hope he made it through.

Canyon was known as the 'party hotel' when I was there (and it WAS). Is it still true?

Never forget - no hot springs w/o a river inlet.... it's not just tourists who get poached each year.

5. Hi! I'm FINALLY replying--better late than never!

Snow every day up until around June 8--very wet, so it didn't last. Now it's warm, but lots of thundershowers and power outages.

Yes, Canyon is known for partying--we've got a few more days until the next paycheck so people are broke and going through withdrawl!

Prices are ranging from around $550 (studio/Jr) to well over $1000. I'd say average for a 2-bedroom is about $700. Purely unscientific, you understand.

Now my question -- WHY would you want to move here???? I'm hoping you'll say "really good job lined up" because there just aren't too many other reasons.

8. Simple reason--sick of winter!

How long have you been there? Why don't you like it? I figure it might drive me crazy, but I want to be warm for a while!

9. Since 1999 -- came for grad school

Do you like trees? Grass? Flowers? If yes, get your fill before you come here, because they're in short supply around here. Also, take pictures of decent fruit. You'd think we'd get good fruit, so close to California and Mexico. They must send it somewhere else.

What this place does have is concrete. I suppose if you're looking for heat, this is the place to be. The temps the last few days have officially been 113, 114, 114, 115. Predicted to get a little closer to "normal" - 108 - by this coming weekend. But be sure to add 5 to 10 degrees extra for concrete.

This is the only place I've ever lived where it is hotter in the evening then it is during the day, since the air temp only drops a little and the concrete begins to release all the accumulated heat from the day. It can easily be over a 100 at 9pm.

It's slightly cooler at the higher elevations, but also more expensive, naturally, since all who can afford it try to "head for the hills."

I've lived in cold places, warm places, wet places, dry places -- this is the previously unknown 10th ring of Hell. The weather is pleasant about 4 months out of the year. For about a month you can actually wear a coat -- even gloves in the early morning!

On another, more serious note; reconsider moving here if you suffer from any chronic or potentially serious medical conditions. I have never, ever, anywhere seen worse medical care. They talk a good game, but it is frighteningly bad.

I wish you well if you decide to come -- my suggestion is to look for something in the NW part of town, if you can.

10. Are you still in grad school?

I assume that's the only reason why you're still there. I guess I'm older than you are, so I would give up a few comforts just to be warm.

11. Almost finished with the PhD (history)

As to age -- maybe, but don't be sure; this is my 2nd career switch, after the Air Force and AT&T. I've got a 25 year old kid, if that's a clue!
I worked at Yellowstone my first summer after high school. Just a restaurant drone (the Old Faithful Lodge), but good fun. Fondest memory was a gigantic marmot who hung around the dorms, mooching food -- hence his hugeness! Least favorite was sunbathing in the buff, falling asleep, and waking nose to nose with a buffalo cow. She was not impressed -- I probably broke some sort of land-speed record running back to the dorm. The marmot was not impressed with either my form or my figure; my dorm mates thought it was too funny.

My heat aversion, btw, most likely has something to do with my advancing years . . . why mother nature invented the hot flash is beyond me!!

getting older I'm craving the heat!

I'm liking it up here except that I feel somewhat isolated. Not sure if I'll do it again. Also, I'm going crazy with the brief amount of internet time I have!

-- I know my house-mate (another middle-aged female) agrees with you. I guess I just have to be different.

Same with the very urban nature of LV. My favorite poem is Yeats' "The Lake Isle of Innisfree" -- ". . . and a hive for the honeybee; and live alone in the bee loud glade."

I suppose this place just makes me crazy on a variety of levels.

14. Oh, and speaking of big marmots...

...saw this HUGE one when I did the 7-mile Hole hike down to the bottom of the Canyon--he's been living the good life!

15. Wonder if it was a descendent of our

enormous fella? I swear, that marmot looked like a "happy Buddha" -- stood about 2 feet (when doing that too cute "standing with paws crossed over very rotund belly, head cocked to one side" thing) with roll after roll of belly fat. You couldn't even see his feet.
Okay -- it was probably not kind to feed him so much; but we all did it, and he was one happy critter.

16. Mine was too far from people to be hand fed, so he was obviously

living the good life some other way.
