NV senate: Ensign (R) 46%, Carter (D) 39%
(not great, but closer than I thought)

John Ensign (R) 46%
Jack Carter (D) 39%

August 7, 2006
Republican Senator John Ensign

Incumbent Republican Senator John Ensign (R) is facing an increasingly competitive race in his bid for re-election to a second term in the U.S. Senate. A recent Rasmussen Reports election survey of 500 likely voters shows Ensign’s lead in the single-digits—46% to 39%—over Democrat Jack Carter (see crosstabs ).

Though they’re already seen as their respective parties’ official candidates, both candidates must first face minor contests in Nevada’s August 15th primary. Ensign is being challenged for the GOP nod by Ed “Fast Eddie” Hamilton of Las Vegas and Carter will square off against middle school science teacher Ruby Jee Tun of Carson City. Neither challenger is expected to mount a serious race and Ensign and Carter are already turning their sights to November.

1. Ensign does have the edge in name recognition
If only it could be arranged to have Ensign speak in public. His handlers know better unfortunately, as he has a history of foot in mouth disease. Only person worse is Gibbons, Jim or Dawn frankly neither one can speak.

3. Hey neighbors
Az here...

What is going on in this race? I'm surprised Carter isn't doing better. Now that is name recognition.

Why do people in your state like Ensign so much? Is it because he is always tan? :puke:I can't think of any other reason. Well then again, I am trying desperately to figure out why Kyl is doing so well in Az, altho our race is alot tighter. Our challenger is within 10 points.

At least you have Reid! We have Kyl AND McCain.

4. Nothing great
No recent polls but Carter was disappointing in the first debate last weekend. He had very short answers to many questions, not what you need when trying to overcome a deficit against an incumbent. After a strong opening statement he drifted and failed to pounce.

The most bizarre answer was when a panelist asked him about the criteria to attack North Korea. Incredibly, Carter said, "let me ask you this, 'Are you better off than you were four years ago?'" I guess that was supposed to draw our attention to Bush's failed foreign policy but it also served to bring up his dad's presidency. In fact, Jack Carter actually mentioned Reagan using that line against his dad. He had no further answer. That allowed Ensign to seize the issue and talk seemingly forever on the subject.

Even congresswoman Shelly Berkley didn't try to pretend Carter had a strong debate. She said it was tough to open up in your first debate against an incumbent but that she was sure Carter would be doing great by the time of the third and last debate.
