8 House candidates off primary ballot

CONCORD, N.H. --Eight House candidates in next week's primary election have been kicked off the ballot because they are not qualified, the state Ballot Law Commission determined Friday.

One of them is first-term Republican state Rep. James Danforth of Andover, who participated in the 2004 Democratic presidential primary.

Danforth said he didn't like Howard Dean or John Kerry and wanted to send a message by voting for someone else. But when he voted in the Democratic primary, Danforth became a Democrat in the eyes of the state.

However, the case of the ones who thought they were Democrats is silly. I would think someone in the House Caucus would have checked party affiliation before now.

Up until this year, the approximatley 800 state rep candidates filed with their local clerks, who checked the registration info on the local checklists. This year, the Secretary of State waited until after the filings were accepted, then checked them against the statewide HAVA list. As for having someone in the house caucus check, you think the one caucus staff person is going to be able to check registrations for 400 Democratic candidates? This is NH, not Maine, our legislature is huge.

At least you have a statwide HAVA list. We won't have one until well after November.

After I thought about this I wondered if HAVA might be a cause. Especiialy when I thought about the incumbent. If he voted int he '04 primary and his party affiliation changed then it means he served this entire last term as a D. Somehow I can't imagine that would have gone unchallenged by someone. But then I wondered if maybe the voter lists are accurate at one level but not at state level. Something doesn't seem right here.

But thanks for the reminder about the size. I really had forgotten you have the second largest legislative body in the world (if I remember correctly.)
