Church leader charged with sex assault on girl, 8

CONCORD, N.H. --A man charged with sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl was a local church leader.

Officials at Concord's New Life Fellowship Church said they've notified the congregation about the allegations against Peter Barton, even though they are unrelated to his church work.

Rev. Bob Jeffers said the decision was made to protect the safety of church members. The church is also counseling Barton, who has resigned from his church position. His responsibilities included ministering abroad.

Barton has been jailed since his arrest on New Years Day. He is due back in court on Tuesday.
