What do you folks do
to get ready for a big snowstorm? I go out and buy food as if I'm going to be stranded for a month. I've always realized that this is silly but I do it anyway and I was in good company today...the supermarket was jammed! On a more serious note, I make sure I have enough oil and propane, that there is enough food for the dogs and that I have batteries. Anything else I'm missing?

1. not really
Sounds like you've got it covered. Candles, warm clothes - wood for the stove/fireplace if you have one.

It's kind of sad - I don't even bother any more. The big storm is a thing of the past.

2. Thanks for the "heads up" Raven.
Your post prompted me to check the weather forecast, which I hadn't done today. :) I think the bright, sunny day instilled a false sense of security. I, too, always stock up like I'm about to be buried in snow for a month.

3. Gas up the cars.
Edited on Tue Feb-13-07 11:38 AM by Tesha
After the ice storm, we lost power for a bit more than
a day, and finally got to test out a contingency plan
we've had for several years now:

Run the house heat off of an inverter running off of
the old Dodge Caravan's battery as the Caravan sat
in the driveway at high idle.

The inverter provided enough juice to run either the
main heat by itself or the back-up heat plus a few
odds and ends.

'Kept us safe from broken pipes.

Foodwise, both Mr. and Mrs. Tesha could stand to
lose a few pounds, so the odds of us starving due
to lack of groceries are vanishingly slim, unlike us.

4. So how is everyone doing?
Right now in the Waterville Valley area, we're getting a steady fall, about a foot so far. No wind yet - that should be fun. Temp - 10F. No power outage (eyes to God)

Nothing's moving except the occasional snowplow and our birds coming in for breakfast.

I do love the stillness and silence.

5. Pretty much the same here
in the Keene area. We had a wild round of wind during the early afternoon but the wind has died down and there is only snow now. I'm betting we have at least a foot but not the 2 feet predicted. My dogs had trouble finding a place to pee! I can't wait to see the critter footprints in the morning. Last snow it looked like a convention!

6. We're getting some wind now, but not bad.
Hope it stays that way. Still snowing steadily here.

Had a robin in the yard this morning. He definitely looked like he was going to change travel agents.

7. Shrug. It's snow
nothing to get excited about. I was let out of work early, so I'm enjoying a bottle of wine and will be cooking up some venison steaks in a bit. yummmmmm!
