Coming to the Queen City to canvass for the Kerry/Edwards campaign or ACT? Feeling hungry after a day of strolling through the subdivisions of Ward 6. or climbing the stairs of the two-deckers of Ward 3? Then help is on the way...
The Athens: Greek comfort food! Great baked lamb, simmered in tomato sauce with potatoes and veggies (usually green beans or endive). Good appetizer selection, especially the grape leaves. Comfortable, laid back place popular with us locals. Located on Central St., adjacent to Veterans Park and the Superior Court, a block from the civic center.
India Palace: Located in one of the countless strip malls on South Willow Street. They have a good (and affordable) buffet at lunch, and dinner is reasonable as well. Very good food, outstanding service. make sure to order a mango lhassi to wash down your saag or tandoori chicken!
Nicky D's La Trattoria: Yummy North End style pizza and pasta. Nick DiMartino makes some of the best calzones you have ever tasted. Popular lunch spot for City Hall and courthouse employees. Located on Hanover St. on the same block as the Palace Theater.
Raxx Billiards: OK, they don't actually serve food, but they can get you pizza and subs from Times Square Pizza next door. The owner, Roy Arsenault, is a big Democrat, having raised quite a bit of money for Mark Fernald and Joe Lieberman. Bob Bruce's campaign headquarters is upstairs, so you will probably run into a few fellow Democrats while you are here. A fun place to kick back, relax and play pool or watch a Sox game (especially if the vocal Yankee-hating Jessica is tending bar!). Look for the big red neon sign on Elm St., just north of the Bridge St. intersection. Say hi to Roy for me!
