Cohen not saying why he quit
By BEVERLEY WANG
Associated Press Writer

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - Staffers on Burt Cohen's defunct U.S. Senate campaign were scrambling Friday to account for a "significant" amount of missing campaign cash.

Cohen, a Democratic state senator, abruptly dropped out of the race Thursday, with aides citing "a campaign situation beyond his control."

Cohen was apparently caught off guard by the financial problem. Campaign aides said Friday that a team was combing financial records, trying to figure out where the money went. The actual amount missing is unknown. A campaign spokeswoman said treasurer John Buchalski is not incriminated.

"It's not like the money was sitting around and it just disappeared. We had money," said Meghan Scott, spokeswoman for the campaign. "We're going back over all of our books."
