In order for a candidate to be placed on the gubernatorial elections ballot they must collect 1,000 signatures.
The Rutgers University Democrats are aiding Sen. Jon Corzine's cause: They pledged to collect that amount of signatures from University students by next week. With acting Gov. Richard J. Codey out of the race, Corzine became frontrunner for the Democratic candidate for governor.
Rutgers College junior Maryanne Celis, president of the RU Dems, said Corzine announced he wants 20,000 signatures above the 1,000 minimum. "He likes to go in style," Celis said about Corzine's high goal for next week.
They focused Monday in the residence halls on George Street, College Avenue campus, and last night on Busch campus.
Celis said there are currently less than 10 people knocking on students' doors asking them to sign the petition. She said she believes RU Dems can collect 200 signatures a day to reach their goal and stir up participation for the future.
