BEACHWOOD — A Beachwood patrolman was airlifted to a regional trauma center after he was hit by a car and dragged for 70 feet by a 15-year-old driver early this morning, authorities said.

Patrolman Eric Harris is recovering after surgery at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where he was taken after the incident, which began about 3 a.m. today, according to Robert A. Gasser, executive assistant Ocean County prosecutor.

Two boys had driven a car, which they had taken without permission, into a Berkeley senior development called Sonata Bay and crashed through a fence into a storage facility area on the property, Gasser said. With Harris in close pursuit, the boys were trapped inside the fenced-in area. The driver did a K-turn with the car and as he tried to get out, struck the officer, pinning him against a fence, Gasser said.

After pinning the o

fficer against the fence, the car proceeded to pull away, dragging the officer and the fence for about 70 feet, Gasser said.
