1. Corzine did very well, but ...
I think he did give Forrester a great sound byte for the next couple of days: Corzine said he would not object to lowering the drinking age to 18 because if they're old enough to fight and die in Iraq, they're old enough to have a drink.

I happen to agree with him. 18 years olds are legal adults in every other aspect of life and are held legally accountable as adults for everything they do, so to tell them they can't have a beer is ridiculous and frankly, I've always felt that it was age discrimination. Besides, go to any college campus in America and you'll find many students under the age of 21 draining a keg!

However, I bet the Forrester team is already creating the ad that says "Jon Corzine would let your CHILDREN drink!" :eyes:

2. I didnt watch the debate, but I read the same thing on
Corzines live blog. I couldnt believe my eyes. On the eve of election day he goes and says something like that. That thing will be played over and over again, and will be on the front of every major publication tomorrow.

11. Well, if they are 18, they aren't children are they?
I know, we agree with each other. I personally think that either you are an adult at 18 or you aren't. If you can join the army, you should be able to toss a beer back too.

Edited on Sat Nov-05-05 09:13 PM by flyarm
drink..he paused so long and said they can drink can't they..and forester said no...that was not good...

now don't flame me ..but i saw it as unprepared..

i live 1/2 yr in nj and 1/2 in fla..but vote in fla...so i am being impartial...because nj is my lifelong home..

but i did not like the way corzine was laughing alot at foresters questions...shaking his head and laughing.,.

alot of dems do that..and damn its just not good...

and corzine just didn't seem too prepared...and forester seemed over prepared...

but corzine let forester talk too long..
i fucking hate rethugs..they are rude and talk over dems constantly...but we need dems to start doing the same or call the rethugs on it...and shut them the fuck up...

but the dems are too polite...
and corzine just let forester go on and on and on...
i absolutely love corzine...but i don't think tonight he was "on" as good as he should have been...

just my 2 cents...

4. Yeah, I slapped my forehead too when I heard that.
The drinking age was raised from 18 to 21 years during Reagan. The provision was attached to a federal highway funds bill. The states had a choice of keeping the age at 18 but if they did, they would have to do without the federal funds.

6. I saw it a little differently
Forrester interrupted a lot - every Repug does that :eyes: - but he also talked too much, which can be a turn off because it makes it seem like he's trying a little too hard to convince people that his ideas are better. Do you know what I mean? Corzine stated the facts and let them speak for themselves. He was short, sweet and to the point. He said what he had to say before people had a chance to zone out. ;-)

In any case, it would have helped a lot if the so-called moderator actually moderated! :eyes:

I'm not sure why Corzine didn't know the state drinking age ... that was weird. He lives in NJ and he has kids, so why wouldn't he know that? I also thought it was a rather odd question. I mean, it's not exactly a hot topic among the voters. Frankly, I wasn't even aware that lowering the drinking age was a possibility. I hadn't heard anything about it until tonight - but I don't have kids, so maybe that's why I didn't know.

Anyway, I'm sure Forrester will make a big deal out of it because Repugs love to nitpick on things like that so they don't have to talk about the real issues. :eyes:

11/5/2005

NEW YORK - U.S. Senator and gubernatorial candidate Jon S. Corzine today released the following statement:

"When I said tonight that I would not have any problem with lowering the drinking age to 18, I did so in the context of 18 also being the age to serve our nation in war.

"Let me be clear, however, that I do not intend to support lowering the drinking age from the current age of 21.

"Evidence clearly shows that raising the drinking age from 18 to 21 has saved thousands of lives by reducing drunk driving. In fact, in the U.S. Senate, I have fought to strengthen our nation's drunk driving laws, authoring a federal `John's Law,' based on New Jersey's statute, which provides for impounding the vehicles of drunk drivers.

"In the balance, our most important priority must be protecting the public and preventing needless deaths.

"In addition, it is essential that we prevent the loss of any federal transportation matching funds."

5. Didn't get much out of it
Forrester was rude, interrupted a lot. The whole thing was kind of a waste of time.
