Dems smelling blood in the water in N.J.-7

Democrats are taking a closer look at Rep. Michael Ferguson’s (R-N.J.) 7th District seat in the wake of allegations that Ferguson’s leadership PAC was involved in laundering contributions for another campaign.

Ferguson, in his second term, won his last race by 17 points. Until recently, Democrats had said nothing about winning his district. But the complaint, filed with the Federal Election Commission by the left-wing group Public Citizen, has focused the party’s attention on the district, due west of Newark.

“Ferguson is way out of step with this district,” Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) spokesman Greg Speed said, “and he is plagued by questionable ethics when it comes to campaign financing.”

On June 15 the DCCC released a press release accusing Ferguson of being a part of “a campaign money-laundering scheme.” According to the complaint, Ferguson’s leadership PAC was one of several political committees that received contributions from a Cincinnati businessman trying to siphon funds illegally to the campaign of Geoffrey Davis, a Republican running for Congress in Kentucky.
