RIDGEWOOD -- Three Democrats are vying for the party's primary nod to face Republican incumbent Scott Garrett for the 5th Congressional District seat.
"Is the party split?" a worried voice asked from the audience of about 75 people at a forum Saturday at the Ridgewood Public Library, as Camille Abate, Paul Aronsohn and Zack Sheinberg sparred with one another and with Garrett's voting record.
Paul Eisenman, who moderated the forum sponsored by Bergen Grassroots, a chapter of Democracy for America, replied that a primary race is a good sign. "It may help to energize the Democratic candidate in November," he said.
Abate, Aronsohn and Sheinberg -- all of whom live in Bergen County -- will need more than a boost of energy to outpoll Garrett, the two-term Sussex County Republican. Garrett replaced Marge Roukema, a moderate Republican from Ridgewood, who held the seat for 22 years. The district's largely Republican voters picked Garrett with 59 percent of the vote in 2002. Garrett beat Democrat Anne Wolfe in 2004 by a 58-to-42 ratio.
