1. I'm pessimistic about Menendez retaining his seat

Except for his local district, Menendez is not really well known to the rest of the state. He also comes off as something of your stereotypical NJ Democratic-machine-style politician (which, to some extent, he is). I can't say there's anything special about him, leadership-wise or personality-wise, that would inspire a genuine state-wide following beyond his entourage of local supporters. Menendez does not have the charisma and state-wide respect of a Lautenberg or Bradley, that's for sure.

Tom Kean, Jr. is a) young; b) the namesake of a near-venerated former NJ governor (who will be campaigning all around the state for him); and c) the soon-to-be recipient of untold millions of dollars and effort from the national GOP.

There is a very real possibility that a NJ Republican will be elected to the Senate for the first time in decades. (This is the result of Codey declining to run for governor and Corzine vacating his Senate seat).

The fact that Menendez is starting to pull ahead in the polls is good. Plus Menendez is a strong pull for hispanic voters who need more represenation in the Senate

I don't believe Menendez will have much of a problem winning in Nov. Kean, while sharing is father's name, shares little else. A RINO friend of mine got free tickets to a Kean fundraiser and wasn't at all impressed, said he didn't have half the presence or charisma of his father. If any undecideds watch a debate between the two, I'm sure Menendez will pull ahead even more. Besides Kean's speech impediment, his views (publicly at least) are still to the right of most people in New Jersey.

Menendez has been planning his senate run for a while now, and has been getting his name out across the state (he spoke at my graduation from Rowan in 2005). I, for one, am not worried. And while polls right now might not instill much faith in Menendez, Polls showed Forrester about that close to Corzine right up till election day.

Welcome to DU too! :hi: Corzine was running pretty close to Forrester for most of election, and pulled away with a nice win on election night. For some reason this always happens in NJ - very extreme repub runs close to a nice dem, but once election night comes, the undecided realize the extremist doesnt represent NJ and goes with the Dem.

Even though Whitman screwed our budget up, she still was fairly moderate (compared to a brownback or frist). Kean, Jr.s is much farther to the right of a whitman, and I have no doubts that Menendez will win.

11. Kean jr was on the ABC radio around noon today

He really sounded not ready for prime time. He was making a big deal about the fact that Menendez did nothing to resolve the problem which shut down the state. The interviewer suggested that as a US Senator, this was not his job - but that didn't stop Kean.

On Iraq, he couldn't articulate a position other than to say that a deadline leads to defeat - he totally misstated Kerry/ Feingold as just giving a deadline - ignoring that it did have provisions with over the horizon cabability etc.

Other than being upset that Bush vetoed stem cell research he sounded most like a dumb Rick Santorum. (and yes, Santorum is pretty dumb himself)

Kean will bumble his way around trying to defend Bush in a year and state where Bush is hated. Bob has the money to run too. I see Menendez winning by a respectable margin.

18. The polling indicates a very close race

With e-voting on the table this year and the voting machine tabulators owned by Republicans, the real election results may never be known. The fact that the polling is close makes a rigged election all the more possible.
Menendez has to challenge Junior to debate every day. The more Junior speaks the more he sounds like that other junior in Washington.
Simply put, we can't afford another Junior in Washington, especially one who never had a real job nor accomplished anything without family support.
Cheney, Bush and Kean: perfect together.
Is Kean Junior Dick Cheney's gay lover? Junior must explain his unusual relationship with Dick Cheney. Inquiring minds want to know. Why did Junior stand up Cheney at a Newark fund raiser? What really happened?

17. I wonder if we went to the same fundraiser

I wasn't at the one dimson attended, just one of the minor fundraisers. I've developed the minor hobby of tagging along to Republican fundraisers to see what they're saying. Kean is definitely just the sort of candidate they favor--white, handsome, and stupid. This last fundraiser, by the way, was the first time in the last three fundraisers that the name "Bush" was mentioned. His impeachment was brought up as a dreadful thing that might happen if they didn't win the house and senate.

LAST WEEK ..I BELIEVE ON OLBERMANS SHOW..AND MY HUBBY SAT AND REALLY WATCHED..which is very unusual...and he said after kean spoke..that kid said nothing..he said ..he sounded like he had no idea what he was talking about..

well i do believe the days where people would vote the ignorant ( i.e. the president)...no one will do that any longer...

7. What they really need to do...

...is start to talk about issues that are important to the people in New Jersey:
1) What is ChimpCo's approval rating here right now? 25% maybe??? Ask this question to the snotty frat boy-"How do you think **** is doing?" And when he says something to the tune of making **** sound like the best president ever, make commercials of the moron praising ****. Then, at the end of the commercial, say "New Jersey, do you agree with this man?" "If you vote for him, you will be voting with ****." Then show the ugly bastard face of **** next to Tommy Boy. Simple as that. Anyone who votes for him after seeing that commercial will hopefully move out of New Jersey after November's election, because those people are a lost cause.

believe New Jerseyans would vote in Kean!! I read that his ads were hitting Menendez on "ethics". If I were Menendez, I'd ask the question: Does Kean accept the finding about how fellow GOPer WHITMAN lied about the EPA reports on the dangers of the WTC-911 crap in the air????

That would put the f*cker on the spot...link him to the lying GOP nationally and then let's see if he "runs" from it all....
