Charges of political extremism flew back and forth between the candidates for the 5th Congressional District seat.
Democratic candidate Anne Wolfe challenged the incumbent, Republican Scott Garrett, on his claims about job growth and the economy. Garrett campaign manager Matthew Barnes responded in a Sussex County newspaper last week by calling Wolfe a "liberal extremist" who wants to raise taxes.
Wolfe campaign manager Christine Mosier shot back in a prepared statement Wednesday. Mosier said Barnes' comments were an unsupported, misleading accusation. Wolfe is not a liberal, not an extremist and not a tax-raiser, Mosier said.
"When we call Scott Garrett a radical extremist, we have the facts to back it up, namely, a long list of his extremist votes in the U.S. House of Representatives," Mosier said. "Anne is an experienced fiscal conservative with a record to prove it We expect Garrett will attack Anne Wolfe with meaningless labels because he knows he cannot win head to head on the issues against her -- not if he were willing to reveal his true positions to the voters. Instead, Scott Garrett wants to rely on his store-bought, political label maker, Matt Barnes, to mislead voters and distort the truth."
Wolfe's campaign said she is expected to make a big announcement tonight during a rally for volunteers. Campaign officials hinted the announcement will include a direct challenge to Garrett.
