Yesterday I spoke with a woman who volunteers in a program that helps the elderly and low-income people do their taxes. She told me about this program that I was vaguely aware of. It is a state program that, once a person reaches 65, freezes the taxes on their home. It is apparently a means Jersey has taken to help people on fixed incomes stay in their homes and not have to leave the state. I thought it sounded like a good program and she agreed it was.
Only one problem: Christie got the program canceled in his drive for the 2 per cent cap.
The impact of this program, according to this volunteer, will be that a lot of elderly will have to move in with their children or leave the state. She says it will primarily affect women.
Personally, if I didn't want to leave the town or home I'd been in, it would be a heart wrenching experience to have to do so because of the property taxes.
This volunteer told me that during tax season time it boggles her mind how these people are able to get by. She said it is not uncommon to find an income of only around 25g a year and half of it going to property taxes.
Another thing she said is that none of them are writing or contacting or protesting. She says she thinks it will take the actual experience next year to drive it home. Then the people will understand the full effect of Christie's actions.
